the story of the cotswolds
Wool, warfare, recession and return
The Cotswolds was once the powerhouse of England’s economy. Then came decline and conflict before its rise today as one of our most desirable places to live or visit.
The history of the Cotswolds is British history with a twist. Lands dotted with ancient tombs became home to the Romans, whose southern capital was Cirencester. Then in medieval times, the rolling hills formed an economic hub because of sheep and weaving. The Cotswolds was rich.
But this prosperity was already under threat when the area saw bloody battles in the Civil War. Then came recession and centuries of neglect before the Arts and Crafts movement and other changes inspired a revival. It has become a highly desirable place to live, while tourists flock to enjoy its unspoilt magnificent scenery and famous honeystone homes. The Cotswolds is rich once more.
